How Long Does Esthetics School Take

If you’re passionate about skincare and helping others look and feel their best, pursuing a career in esthetics could be the perfect path for you. Esthetics is a growing field with opportunities in salons, spas, medical settings, and even freelance work. However, before you can start your journey as an esthetician, you’ll need to complete a state-approved training program and meet licensing requirements.
One of the first questions many aspiring estheticians have is: how long does esthetics school take? The answer depends on the program you choose, your schedule, and the state where you plan to practice.
In this guide, we’ll break down the time commitment for both basic and master esthetician training, factors that can affect your course length, and what to expect from your education.
Basic Esthetician Training
In Utah, becoming a licensed esthetician requires 600 hours of training. We offer flexible learning options, including on-campus, distance learning, and hybrid programs. Regardless of the format you choose, the total number of required training hours remains the same.
During your training, you’ll learn essential skills like facial treatments, skin analysis, and artistic makeup application. You’ll also gain hands-on experience by working with real clients under supervision in our student salon.
The time it takes to complete the course depends on your schedule:
- Full-time (35 hours/week): 17.5 to 26.5 weeks
- Part-time (20 hours/week): 30 to 45 weeks
This means you can finish in as little as 4 months or up to a year, depending on how many hours you dedicate each week. Part-time options are ideal for those balancing work or other commitments.
Master Esthetician Training
The Master Esthetician course requires 1,200 hours of training, making it twice as long as the basic esthetician program. In this program, we also offer flexible learning options, including on-campus, distance learning, and hybrid formats. No matter which option you choose, you’ll still need to complete the same total number of required training hours.
Your training will cover advanced techniques, including spa manicures, aromatherapy, microdermabrasion, and specialized makeup applications. These skills are highly valued in medical settings and luxury spas, where there is a growing demand for master estheticians.
The time it takes to complete the course depends on the schedule you choose:
- Full-time (35 hours/week): 35 to 52.5 weeks
- Part-time (20 hours/week): 60 to 90 weeks
With these time frames, you can complete your master esthetician training in as little as 8 months or take up to a year and a half, depending on your schedule.
Once you complete your training, the next step is scheduling your state licensure exam, which can take a few weeks. After passing, you’ll be ready to pursue job opportunities in salons, spas, or other esthetician-related roles.
Does Distance Education Take Longer?
Not at all. Distance education courses follow the same number of required hours and the same overall timeline. The primary benefit of distance education is the flexibility it offers, allowing you to create a schedule that works around your existing job or other responsibilities. As long as you’re enrolled in a state-approved program, distance education is fully recognized in Utah.
While distance learning offers scheduling flexibility, on-campus training does provide extra benefits, such as access to the campus salon, which can be a valuable part of your hands-on learning experience.
Do You Have to Complete The Course In One Go?
Generally, you’ll need to complete your training without interruption. However, you can request a leave of absence for specific reasons, such as personal health issues, family emergencies, military obligations, or other significant life events. Taking a leave of absence will extend the length of your program.
If you stop attending without approval, you may be considered withdrawn and could face difficulties completing the program, or may be required to meet additional requirements. Attendance is key to staying on track with your training timeline.
Are the Requirements Different in Other States?
Yes, the number of required hours for licensure varies by state. While 600 hours is common, some states require as few as 266 hours (Florida) or as many as 1,550 hours (Wisconsin). Most states have similar requirements, so if you’re studying full-time, you should be able to complete the 600-hour course in 17 to 18 weeks. However, in states with higher requirements, training will take longer.
If you’re licensed in Utah, this doesn’t automatically qualify you to work in another state—though some states offer reciprocity, allowing licensed estheticians to transfer their credentials with minimal additional training. Be sure to check with the state’s licensing board for specific details.
Some states also require continuing education each year, though Utah does not have this requirement.
